Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease which prevents people from tolerating gluten in their diet. In the small intestine there are small finger-like structures called villi which absorb the nutrients from food. When the villi are damaged (or atrophic) they can no longer absorb nutrients properly.
People with coeliac disease are encouraged to follow a strict, life-long gluten-free diet to maintain optimal health. Gluten is a protein found in
wheat, oats, barley and rye.
Coeliac disease can only be diagnosed by a doctor through blood testing and bowel biopsy. If you are currently being tested for coeliac disease it is
important that you continue eating a diet with gluten until your tests are complete.
Once coeliac disease has been diagnosed a dietitian is the only health professional specially trained to advise on a healthy balanced gluten-free diet.
